HO, GHANA – A new chapter for youth empowerment has begun in Ho with the launch of the "After-School Fashion Design and Technology Program." This innovative initiative, created by the Somnia Osbrain Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to uplifting adolescent girls, young mothers, and marginalized communities, is set to provide vital skills and a career pathway for hundreds of young people.
The project was officially launched on August 21, 2023, with a clear mission to equip young people with the creative and technical skills needed to thrive in the modern garment industry.
The first training session, which began in October 2023, engaged approximately 300 students between the ages of 12 and 19 from the communities of Bakpe and Bame. Over three weeks, the students received intensive training in the fundamentals of fashion. The curriculum was designed to be both educational and inspiring, covering basic techniques and sparking creativity.
According to Osborn Martin Gatugbe, the Chief Director of the Somnia Osbrain Foundation, the organization has a three-year history of providing business skills to young people to help them secure stable incomes. "This program is a continuation of our commitment to empowering youth," Mr. Gatugbe stated. "By giving them these skills, we are not just teaching them to sew; we are teaching them to build a future."
The first session will culminate in a competition where students will showcase their final designs, followed by a graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements. The program's second session is scheduled to continue in January 2024, promising to reach even more young people and further expand the initiative's impact in the region.
