Empowering Women with Eco-Friendly Skills: Reusable Sanitary Pads Training at HTU

HO, GHANA – In a significant step towards empowering women and promoting sustainable hygiene practices, the Somnia OSBRAIN Foundation and EcoFlo Foundation, in collaboration with the Ho Technical University (HTU) Students’ Representative Council's Women's Commissioner (SRC WOCOM), successfully concluded a training workshop on sewing reusable sanitary pads. The project equipped over 30 female students with a vital skill that addresses a critical need within their communities.

The initiative goes beyond mere skill acquisition; it is designed to empower the students to become agents of change. By learning to create reusable sanitary pads, they are now equipped to train and support vulnerable girls and teenage mothers who often face the difficult choice between their dignity and their education. For many girls in rural communities, the lack of access to affordable sanitary products can lead to missed school days, embarrassment, and a higher risk of health issues. This project directly combats that by providing a sustainable, long-term solution.

A Sustainable and Impactful Solution

The project also highlights the growing importance of eco-friendly solutions. Unlike disposable pads, which contribute to plastic waste and environmental pollution, the reusable pads are a sustainable alternative that benefits both the user and the planet. This focus on environmental responsibility aligns with a global movement towards a greener future. The trainees are now poised to not only improve the lives of women in their communities but also to advocate for environmentally conscious practices.

The ripple effect of this training is immense. By equipping these future leaders, the program ensures that the knowledge and skills are passed down, creating a self-sustaining cycle of empowerment. The foundations and HTU believe that true change starts at the grassroots level. As one of the participants noted, "Little may mean nothing to some, but it makes all the difference knowing that there is hope elsewhere."

This project serves as a powerful model for how collaborative partnerships can tackle complex social and environmental issues. The hope is for this initiative to be replicated across the region and beyond, ensuring that every girl has the resources she needs to stay in school and live with dignity.
